Out Lines – Our history, uncovered
We’re everywhere. We always have been and always will be. With surging LGBT+ representation in popular culture, it’s hard to imagine a time when we weren’t visible. But – not so very long ago – presenting the gay experience on stage was extremely risky business.
In Out Lines, we explore the forgotten history of gay theater in the United States through the plays of our most influential writers.
Gay theater didn’t begin with Boys in the Band. Uncover the truth with us in Out Lines.
Your hosts
Virginia
Baeta
Virginia Baeta was California born and raised, but is New York to her core. An actor, playwright, and producer, she was integral to the development of The Queen’s Company, NYC’s all-female classical theatre company. She came up with the idea of doing this podcast back when podcasting wasn’t cool. But it ironically took a global pandemic to get this show in your earholes. She also writes things. Virginia is represented in the Out Lines cat brigade by Meatball, but Gabbie is glaring from the corner.
Mark
Finley
Mark Finley is the Artistic Director of The Other Side of Silence (TOSOS) – NYC’s oldest and longest producing LGBT+ theatre company and has directed many of their acclaimed productions notably Doric Wilson’s A PERFECT RELATIONSHIP (2004 OOBR Award), Doric Wilson’s STREET THEATER (2016 IT Award Best Revival) and Jewelle Gomez’ LEAVING THE BLUES (2020 Audelco Winner). His work as a director has been seen off off Broadway, off Broadway, internationally and regionally. He is currently on the faculty of the acting department at the American Musical and Dramatic Academy. He is a graduate of the University of North Carolina School of the Arts. More importantly, his favorite feline is Simon.
Jordan
Schildcrout
Jordan Schildcrout teaches, dramaturgs, and writes about theatre, usually of the queer variety. He’s Professor of Theatre & Performance at SUNY Purchase, and his books include In the Long Run: A Cultural History of Broadway’s Hit Plays and Murder Most Queer: The Homicidal Homosexual in the American Theatre. His work as an editor includes the premiere publication of the gay liberation era erotic comedy Tubstrip by Jerry Douglas and the forthcoming 50 Key Figures in Queer US Theatre. Other scholarly articles have focused on the Stonewall Riots, the apocalypse, spinster detectives, and the Muppets. He hopes one day to sleep as well as his cat, Jupiter. @sleepingjupiternyc
